QUALITY RESULTS START WITH THE DETAILS

A great lawn starts from the ground up. In Northeast Florida, that means choosing the right sod for our sandy soil, humid summers, and occasional winter freezes. Proper site preparation, correct grading, quality sod, and careful installation practices help create a lawn that establishes quickly and stays healthy year after year.

At Island Green Lawn, we focus on thorough ground prep, precise sod placement, and professional installation techniques that help Nassau County homeowners replace failing grass, complete new landscape projects, or finally enjoy a weed-free lawn.

Whether you’re patching bare spots, replacing an entire yard, or installing sod for a new home build, our goal is simple: deliver a lush, green, properly installed lawn that takes root fast and looks beautiful from day one.

frequently asked questions

What types of sod grow best in Nassau County, FL?

Northeast Florida’s climate is ideal for warm-season grasses. The most popular and reliable options include:

  • St. Augustine grass – best for shade and coastal areas; very common in Nassau County

  • Bermuda grass – great for full sun, high-traffic yards, and drought tolerance

  • Zoysia grass – fine texture, slow growing, handles both sun and moderate shade

  • Centipede grass – low maintenance, acid soil tolerant, good for “lazy” lawn owners

We’ll help you choose the right sod based on your yard’s sun exposure, soil type, and how you use your lawn.

Pricing depends on sod type, square footage, site prep needed, and accessibility.

We provide free, no-obligation estimates for every job.

A complete installation typically includes:

  • Removal of old grass or weeds (if replacing)

  • Rototilling and soil amendment (adding compost or topsoil as needed)

  • Final grading and smoothing for proper drainage

  • Laying fresh sod tightly with staggered seams

  • Rolling to ensure root-to-soil contact

  • Initial deep watering

  • Post-installation care instructions specific to NE Florida

We handle the heavy work, but you can help by:

  • Marking sprinkler heads, utility boxes, or buried lines

  • Clearing furniture, toys, or debris from the area

  • Ensuring we have access to a water source (hose bib)

If your yard has major drainage issues, we’ll flag that during your estimate and recommend solutions before laying sod.

No… and you shouldn’t. Existing grass, weeds, or old sod must be removed first. Laying new sod over old grass prevents roots from reaching soil, creates uneven surfaces, and traps pests or diseases.

We always start with a clean, bare, graded surface.

Unlike seeding, sod can be installed almost year-round in Nassau County. However, the best windows are:

  • Spring (March–May) – ideal: warm soil, reliable rain

  • Early fall (September–October) – good: less heat stress, still time to root before winter

We avoid extreme summer heat (July–August) for large jobs unless you have an irrigation system, and we pause during hard freezes (rare but possible in inland areas like Hilliard or Callahan).

Wait until the sod is firmly rooted — usually 2 to 3 weeks in spring/fall, longer in cooler weather. To check, gently tug a corner of a sod piece. If it resists lifting, roots have taken hold. When you do mow, use a sharp blade and don’t remove more than one-third of the grass height.

Watering is the most critical step after installation:

  • Days 1–7: Water twice daily (morning and late afternoon) for 15–20 minutes per zone to keep sod and top 1 inch of soil constantly moist

  • Days 8–14: Water once daily in the morning

  • Days 15–28: Water every other day, then transition to normal lawn watering (1–1.5 inches per week)

During Fernandina Beach’s hot spring or early fall, you may need more frequent watering.

You don’t need one, but it makes success much easier. Without irrigation, you’ll need to hand-water or use sprinklers on timers religiously for 3–4 weeks.

Many Nassau County homeowners without irrigation install smaller sod areas (patches or side yards) successfully, but for full lawns, we strongly recommend an irrigation system or at least above-ground sprinklers with timers.

Yes… but it needs help. Our native sandy soil drains very quickly and holds few nutrients. That’s why we always amend with organic compost or topsoil during site prep. We also recommend a starter fertilizer after installation.

With proper prep and care, sod thrives perfectly in NE Florida’s sandy conditions.

Yes. Sloped areas require proper staking or tacking to prevent erosion. For properties near salt marsh or tidal creeks (common on Amelia Island), we recommend salt-tolerant St. Augustine varieties. We’ve installed sod on many waterfront and marsh-front properties in Nassau County.

  • Week 1: Sod looks like freshly laid patches (seams visible)

  • Week 2–3: Roots begin anchoring; seams start closing

  • Week 4–6: Seams disappear; you can mow normally

  • 3 months: Fully established, resilient lawn

Patience during the first month makes all the difference.
Avoid heavy foot traffic for at least two weeks.

Yes… that’s part of our standard service for replacement jobs. We’ll kill or remove existing vegetation, dispose of it properly, and prep the bare soil.

This is especially common in Nassau County yards where St. Augustine has died from chinch bugs, fungus, or freeze damage.

For standard residential lawn replacement, no. For new construction or large grading changes, check with Nassau County Building Department. We handle typical installations without permits, but we’ll advise you if your project requires one.
